As Christians, we continually seek to foster a closer relationship with God. We desire to be mindful of Jesus in our daily lives. Mindfulness, at its core, is about being present and engaged in the current moment. To aid us in our spiritual journey, we can adapt the PETTLEP model—originally developed in sports psychology for mental imagery—to deepen our mindfulness of Jesus. As a former athlete, I have seen firsthand how helpful this type of imagery can be for performance. Now, as a Christian, I recognize how these components can also foster a closer connection to Jesus.

This blog post will guide you through the PETTLEP components: Physical, Environment, Task, Timing, Learning, Emotion, and Perspective. We will also offer practical examples for integrating these steps into your prayers, worship, and spiritual practices.

Understanding PETTLEP

The PETTLEP model stands for:

  • Physical

  • Environment

  • Task

  • Timing

  • Learning

  • Emotion

  • Perspective

Each of these elements works together to enhance focus, awareness, and overall performance—in our case, our awareness of Jesus. By understanding and applying these elements to our spiritual lives, we can cultivate a stronger, more mindful connection to God.

Physical Engagement

The first element of PETTLEP is Physical engagement. An athlete incorporates this by imagining themselves geared up for a game in uniform. As Christians, we can use our bodies to anchor our awareness of Jesus. For example, consider adopting a posture of submission and reverence when you pray. Kneeling or standing with your arms open can physically manifest your desire to receive God’s presence.

Another practical way to embody this engagement is through breath. When you inhale, visualize breathing in God’s love and grace. As you exhale, imagine releasing doubts and distractions. This focused breathing can ground you and help maintain your mindfulness while engaging in prayer or worship.

Lastly, as you use your body to anchor to Jesus, notice what you feel before and after. Consider any shifts in your level of tension or stress in certain areas. Allow Jesus to lay His hands on those areas that feel tense.

Creating a Sacred Environment

The next PETTLEP element is Environment. Athletes incorporate this component by envisioning themselves on the field or court where they will perform. As Christians, our surroundings significantly influence our ability to be present and mindful. Create a dedicated space in your home for prayer and worship. This could be a quiet corner with a comfortable chair, a candle, and your Bible.

When you enter this space, consciously set aside any distractions. Keep your phone in another room and minimize noise. An intentional and sacred environment makes it easier to feel Jesus's presence.

Consider incorporating elements that remind you of Christ, such as images, quotes, or symbols. When you step into this space, let these tactile reminders evoke a deeper awareness of God’s love and peace.

Additionally, notice Jesus outside these sacred spaces. Allow Him to show up in the car, in the kitchen, or in your living room. By being aware of where Jesus is in each environment, you can connect with Him in every moment of your life.

Fostering Meaningful Tasks

The Task element involves recognizing the specific activities that help foster your connection with Jesus. Implement rituals or practices that resonate with you. This might include daily devotions, prayer journaling, or participating in communal worship.

Create a daily task that focuses on connecting with Jesus. For instance, during your morning coffee, reflect on a scripture verse. As you read, visualize the scene: Jesus teaching, healing, or comforting. This visualization reinforces the teachings, making them more tangible.

Another important way to incorporate Jesus in your tasks is through daily activities. Visualize Him engaging in those tasks with you. Notice Him in the car while picking up kids from school. See Him pushing the cart while grocery shopping or sitting next to you on the couch watching TV. Include Him in every task, and you'll begin to notice His presence more fully.

Timing and Rhythm

The Timing aspect of PETTLEP for athletes is about visualizing skills as they happen in real time. As Christians, we can also apply this by noticing our daily tasks in the present moment and by establishing a rhythm for our spiritual practices.

Consider setting aside specific times for prayer and worship. Perhaps you can meditate on God’s word for five minutes each morning before beginning your day.

Align your spiritual timing with natural moments in your routine. Use your lunch break as a time for prayer or reflection. Associating your mindfulness practices with these routines creates a rhythm, making it easier to connect with Jesus.

Busy professionals often struggle with distractions, yet establishing a fixed time can be transformative. Over time, these small moments can lead to significant spiritual growth.

Deepening Learning

The Learning element emphasizes the importance of active engagement with scripture. Instead of passively reading, immerse yourself in the stories and lessons. Ask questions: What does this passage reveal about Jesus? How can I apply it to my life?

Utilize devotionals, online courses, or Bible study groups to enhance your engagement with biblical texts. The more familiar you become with Jesus’s teachings, the more mindful you will be of His presence.

Integrating these insights into your daily life not only helps you feel closer to Jesus but also nourishes your spiritual understanding.

Embracing Emotion

Emotion plays a crucial role in mindfulness and spiritual practice. Allow yourself to feel the emotions associated with your relationship with Jesus—love, gratitude, joy, and even grief. These feelings will serve as powerful reminders of His presence in your life. Notice how He feels towards you and your situation as you engage with Him.

When you pray, be open about your emotions. If you feel overwhelmed, express that to Him. If you're joyful, celebrate it in your prayers. Creating an emotional connection amplifies your awareness of God’s work in your life.

Reflect on your experiences during worship. Consider how the music or message impacts your heart. Allowing these emotions to wash over you can deepen your connection with Jesus and enrich your spiritual experience.

Shifting Perspective

The final element of PETTLEP is Perspective. As athletes visualize skills from different viewpoints, we can also adopt a faith-filled perspective in our lives. How can you view daily challenges and victories through the lens of your relationship with Jesus?

For instance, when encountering difficulties, ask how Jesus would guide you through the situation. This perspective shift can change how you experience everyday life.

Practice gratitude by reflecting on your blessings. How does viewing your life in light of your faith change your outlook? Keeping Jesus at the center of your thoughts and actions will heighten your awareness of His continuous presence.

The Journey to Mindfulness of Jesus

Implementing the PETTLEP model into your spiritual practices encourages greater mindfulness and connection with Jesus. As you engage physically, cultivate a purposeful environment, create dedicated tasks, establish timing, embrace learning, connect emotionally, and shift your perspective, you'll become more aware of God’s presence in your life.

Explore each element of PETTLEP and allow yourself to grow in your spiritual journey. Building a closer relationship with Jesus is a continual practice that you can integrate into your daily life.

By embedding these practices into your routine, you can cultivate a more profound awareness of the Lord’s presence, transforming ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences of faith.

Fostering mindfulness of Jesus can fundamentally change your outlook on life, helping you navigate both good and challenging times with a heart anchored in faith. Embrace this journey and open yourself to the divine encounters that await you.

HOW'S IT GOING WITH GUY'S----OVER THERE TODAY.

I'm MUHAMMAD KAMAAR A Wix Partner. During a recent review, Wix’s technical team highlighted your website and recommended it to my team for support pointing out areas to improve performance, visibility on Google, and overall accessibility for users.

After conducting a detailed review, I noticed a few technical search rank hurdles, crawl errors, slow indexation, missing structured data, and accessibility gaps like unlabeled images and keyboard-navigation issues. Left unaddressed, these can limit visibility, delay Google indexing, and affect user experience.

By optimizing your site with the right search rank strategies and webpage design (including any potential redesign where needed), we can boost traffic and increase actions from visitors.
